21: A Life in Photographs
Benjamin Swett & Rachel Swett
September 3 - October 9, 2011

Rachel Swett was born into a family of photographers, and took pictures throughout her life producing a remarkable and highly individual body of work. Not until after her death did her father, Benjamin realize how seriously she had pursued the craft of photography. With the encouragement of CAS, Benjamin has brought together Rachel’s work and combined it with his own photographs of her and of the places she loved to try to construct a kind of visual biography (and autobiography) of a young woman who should still be with us.

Benjamin Swett (born 1959) is a New York-based photographer specializing in landscape and architecture, with a particular interest in combining photographs with text. His books include The Hudson Valley: A Cultural Guide (2009), Route 22 (2007), and Great Trees of New York City: A Guide (2000).

Rachel Barrett Swett (1989-2010) was a lifelong traveler and photographer who died after a skiing accident in Christchurch, New Zealand at the end of her Junior Year Abroad from Columbia College. From kindergarten through 12th grade Rachel attended the Brearley School in Manhattan, where she studied photography with Tish Webster. She loved children and had planned to focus on child psychology during her final year at Columbia.

Discards
A solo show of work by Jeff Christensen

March 5 – April 10, 2011 - The Catskill Art Society is proud to present Discards, a solo show of work by Jeff Christensen, at the CAS Arts Center at 48 Main Street in Livingston Manor, NY.

The paintings in Discards rifle through the psychic sidewalk to retrieve some gold and some dross from the piles awaiting the waste removal trucks.

The exhibition is divided into two sections: Love Is All Around Us, which takes abandoned love letters as its springboard; and Welcome To Taboo, which discreetly takes a seat in the psychiatrist’s office to glean inspiration.

Jeff Christensen was a graphic designer in New York City from 1983-2002 and has been a full-time resident of Sullivan County since 2003. He and his wife operate Hamish & Henry Booksellers, and he also hosts a weekly world music show, Night Out, on WJFF.

CAS Gallery hours for this exhibition are Thursday - Saturday, 11am – 6pm, and Sunday, 11am - 3pm.The CAS Arts Center is wheelchair accessible.
