A Lifetime of Stories: Memoir Writing

4 sessions: Fridays, November 1 to November 22, 6pm - 8pm

Instructor: Helena Clare Pittman

Remember the smell of fresh earth after rain? Your mother’s pot roast? The sea? Suddenly childhood is here! We are each rich in stories; we are living stories! Some of our stories float on the surface of memories. Others seem just out of reach. And others, part of the treasure trove of childhood, are deep inside, surprisingly intact. Think you can’t remember? You’ll be gratified and surprised how the child is still very much alive within you. Tried and true writing prompts are the key to open the door to this wonderful nourishment.

Helena Clare Pittman has taught memoir writing for many years; in schools, libraries, and at the City University of New York Queens College Graduate School of Education as an artist-in-residence.

Fee: Member $135, Non-Member $150

Workshop: Collage for All Ages

1 session: Saturday, August 24, 3pm - 5:30pm

Instructor: Erica Hart

Join us for this open workshop for all ages and play with one of the most hands-on (and devilishly simple) art forms there is--collage!

Collage is an essentially modern technique that uniquely allows artists to explore arrangements of printed materials and found objects as ready-made imagery. By composing and joining these items to arrangements (sometimes harmonious, and sometimes very unlikely...), you can challenge your perception of the familiar and create a new visual language.

Participants in this workshop will design a "self-portrait" using both conventional and unconventional materials into an either abstracted or more representational collage. You are free to combine contradictory qualities, experiment, and refine control over texture and shapes. Renowned local artist Erica Hart will lead this exciting workshop. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Free and open to the public

To register, e-mail info@catskillartsociety.org or call 845-436-4227.

Sketching Nature's Geometry

2 sessions: Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, 2pm - 5pm

Instructor: Donna Friedson

In this intensive workshop, you will make drawings and quick sketches of all the geometric forms you come across in nature. This will sharpen your powers of observation as you look for the basic shapes underpinning every form as a way of simplifying the drawing and sketching process. By using the cylinder, sphere, cone and cube, you will understand what you see and have a firm framework for a convincing drawing. We will be using charcoal pencils, conte crayons, and willow charcoal.

Fee: Member $75, Non-Member $85
