Samuelle Green, Judith Henry and Lizzie Wright

The first exhibitions of 2023 feature the sculptural work of Judith Henry, Samuelle Green, and Lizzie Wright, three artists who explore the intersection and divergence of contemporary sculptural practices utilizing found objects.

Through playful and sardonic humanoid shapes, Henry employs detritus to examine the myriad identities of the self. Green, meanwhile, invites contemplation on our ontological relationship to her architectural forms rendered in found paper. Wright carries viewers up, her apparitions taking shape through discarded materials, illuminated with glowing light. Together, the presentation reflects disparate perspectives on what it is to be human, from human forms and experiences to visions of an afterlife.

Samuelle Green's immersive installation of paper forms, utilizing discarded books, creates an encompassing architectural environment in the gallery. Each square foot of work uses nearly 140 individual pieces of paper to construct a transformative space for audiences. Green’s organic and geometric work explores the interaction of the human-made and non-human visual world languages.

Judith Henry’s Casting Call is a series of almost 300 small abstract sculptures of reclaimed materials, utilizing adhesive tape, paint tubes, cotton balls sponges, etc. These figures create anthropomorphic forms that represent complex personas and the diversity of shapes. The work examines the friction between interior life and the public self. The series explores personal identity with surrogates which take the form of masks, drawings and papier-mâché sculptures.

Lizzie Wright’s Frankenstein-like constructions are brought to life by flowing electricity. Her use of glowing and reflective light is an effective conduit for mood, tone, and emotion. Wright’s innovative use of light is paired with scrap or found materials, challenging audience’s concept of what is damaged. The often transparent forms take on a sense of spirituality, evoking an other-worldly presence.

About the Artists

Samuelle Green was born and raised in rural Pennsylvania then attended Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Parsons School of Design in New York. After graduation she continued to live and work in Brooklyn, NY for nearly 20 years. It is there that she gained experience working at museums, as an artist's assistant and at design studios. Green was simultaneously developing her own work. In recent years she relocated her studio to her hometown in Pennsylvania where she continues to develop and focus on her artwork and exhibit internationally. @samuellegreen www.samuellegreen.com

Judith Henry is a multi-media artist, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After receiving a BFA in 1964 from Carnegie-Mellon, she moved to New York and started making art. Henry has shown her art in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Cleveland, Philadelphia and internationally in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London and Switzerland. She has recently had solo shows at BravinLee programs, The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, The National Arts Club, and Davis Orton Gallery. Lizzie Wright is an artist who lives and works in New York City and Livingston Manor. She received an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University and has exhibited at a variety of spaces including Marinaro Gallery in NYC; Hudson House, Hudson, NY (both curated by Jesse Jag); Rawson Projects, NY; Essex Flowers, NY; Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, NY; and Artist Curated Projects, Los Angeles.
